Our Heritage

Our Heritage

Galtsand mountain mark

Long before design software, Galt Sand was built by hand. Catalogs across the table, shapes cut with an X-Acto knife, layouts photographed, shifted, and shot again. From that Cedar Rapids worktable came licensed apparel for more than fifty American universities and the NFL, beginning with a collegiate sweatshirt made to outlast the season. Forty years later, it still does.

William J. Schoeben, a University of Iowa graduate with a degree in marketing, joined six partners to establish Galt Sand in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1986. Together, they developed a collegiate apparel brand that reached customers across the United States.

Historical trademark records list January 29, 1987, as the first-use-in-commerce date for the GALT SAND mark, covering men’s and women’s shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, tops, and T-shirts. Federal registrations followed in 1988, documenting an early chapter in the brand’s American sportswear history.

By February 1991, Galt Sand was hiring for its Williamsburg, Iowa, outlet as its retail division expanded. Its collegiate reach also extended beyond the Midwest: University of Texas System records listed the company’s apparel licensing agreement with UT Arlington among those presented for Board approval.

A Family of Labels

Galtsand developed a family of labels alongside its core brand, including Galt Crew, Sport-One, Field Exchange, Hat-Head, and Ozark Mountain Outfitters. Spanning technical gear, sportswear, fleece, and headwear, the range carried Galtsand beyond campus and into the outdoors, a philosophy that remains constant today.

A Collegiate Milestone

For fiscal 1994-95, Galt Sand ranked fourth among the Collegiate Licensing Company’s top-selling manufacturers, following Starter, Nike, and Champion. Less than a decade after its founding in Cedar Rapids, the Iowa company had established a presence in licensed collegiate sportswear.

In fiscal 1995, Galt Sand ranked among Ohio State’s five leading licensees, alongside Champion and Starter, from a field of approximately 450 manufacturers. That November, the University of Iowa Book Store advertised Galt Sand in The Daily Iowan, placing the brand in the Iowa Memorial Union on co-founder William J. Schoeben’s former campus, a connection to its Iowa roots less than a decade after its founding.

That same year, the company became an adidas licensee, producing T-shirts, fleece, and team jerseys while building on its established experience in collegiate and professional sportswear.

In June 2004, adidas-Salomon acquired Valley Apparel, opening a new era for the Cedar Rapids operation. Renamed adidas Team in 2005, the business continued its work in licensed collegiate and professional sportswear, building on an Iowa apparel heritage that began with Galt Sand.

Across the Atlantic

The UK launch introduced a men’s Heritage line with a clear point of view: American collegiate sportswear refined through British tailoring and designed for the pace of commuter life. From that foundation, the assortment expanded into outdoor apparel and activewear, creating a broader wardrobe for workdays, weekends, and changing weather.

From Iowa, Out Into the World

From the campus bookstores and stadiums of Iowa to the rain, trails, and city streets of the Pacific Northwest, Galtsand has always been shaped by place. Today, we design with the same sense of purpose: thoughtful apparel grounded in quality, function, and comfort, made to move through changing weather, daily rituals, and years of wear.

Today

The Collegiate Return

College has always been the heart of Galt Sand. We grew up in campus bookstores and stadium stands, in school colors worn on game day and sweatshirts kept long after graduation. Today, we are returning to those campuses, guided by original Galtsand garments and the distinct history of each institution. Our history opens the conversation. What we make next must earn its place.
